Looking to Trust Volume Calculations

I’m looking to trust volume calculations of gravel stockpiles. The reason I question the calculations is: I did a measurement of a flat area with no volume on it, and the calculations came in at 900 cubic meters.

It’s hard to know what you are seeing without a test dataset or steps to reproduce. Folks using ODM have seen accuracies within typical photogrammetry ranges, but specifics matter with respect to data collection.

I would recommend measuring a stockpile with surveyed volume as a test, and take a look at the tutorials on stockpile volume here:
https://docs.opendronemap.org/tutorials/#measuring-stockpile-volume

Edit, just adding this from the docs:

Expected accuracy

For carefully planned and executed projects, and specially when GSD is less than 1 cm, the expected accuracy should be in the range of 1% to 2%. The resulting accuracy is comparable to the commercially available photogrammetry software and the obtained using survey grade GNSS equipment.

I should edit that to say “closed source photogrammetry software”….

Thank you for your reply and for the link.

Qgis has a good plug-in for volumes. I’ve compared it to my geodetic cad software at work and it’s very accurate.

Might be something for you.
