Installing WebODM on MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina

I’m having problems installing WebODM on my Macbook Pro, specifically with the installation of Docker. Docker requires MacOS 11 or newer and I’m hardware-limited to MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina.

My computer exceeds the minimum requirements described in the WebODM for Mac Install Manual. It requires MacOS 10.11 El Capitan or newer, Mac hardware from 2010 or newer, 20GB of free disk space and 4GB RAM.

My 2012 Macbook Pro has a 2.5GHz Core i5, 16GB RAM, and over half of the 500GB SSD drive is available.

Is it possible to get an older version of Docker to complete the installation of WebODM?

Welcome!

The manual doesn’t have the latest System Requirements, but they are listed on the page you purchase from:

As you noted, yes, Docker requires MacOS 11 or newer.

You can page through the older Docker for MacOS Releases to find one that works with MacOS 10.15, but they do not make it easy to find out which one this will be.

Maybe try something in the 4.1.x range?

UPDATE*

I should have tinkered with this more before posting, so…

I was able to get an older version of Docker (4.15) which works with Intel-based Mac’s running 10.15.7 Catalina. I disabled the pesky reminder to update Docker to the latest (and non-compatible) version.

Once installed and running, WebODM Manager was able to run through its “process” and launch WebODM within my Google Chrome window. When prompted, I did have to tell Docker “reset to its factory settings” and later create an Admin username and password for WebODM.

Since it appears to be up and running (looks like my Windows version, just in Google Chrome vs a standalone program), I gave it a dataset to process to see how it does.

My overall opinion about this process is that it hardly qualifies for the installer that I paid for. If, however, it works, then I’m happy. I have paid for both the Windows and Mac installers and it is clear that the Windows installer is far more user friendly. If I wasn’t moderately tech-savvy, I would be up creek without a paddle at this point given the limited insight into forcing this onto an ‘old but good’ Mac.

Thanks for the feedback.

However, your mac is unsupported, so we are not targeting improving the install experience on unsupported MacOS, same as for Windows 7 and 8.0.

There are components we rely upon that have long since dropped support for these OSs, so we unfortunately have to keep up with new releases and adjust our list of supported configurations accordingly.
