Inconsistent Results

I have been practicing how to use ODM command line on Windows 10 Home. I was able to get a set of images to successfully to process running the following command from the Windows command line:

docker run -ti --rm -v /c/Users/Michael/datasets:/datasets opendronemap/odm --project-path /datasets project

This process completed with the following message:

I then tried running a second docker instance to see if I could run two Docker processes at the same time. I placed a copy of the same images in a different location when I ran the test using the following command from the Windows command line:

docker run -ti --rm -v /c/Users/Michael/dronemaps/datasets:/datasets opendronemap/odm --project-path /datasets project

The second process kicked off but hit the following error after 2 hours.

Summary:
When I ran two docker processes at the same time, the process that was run using the docker run -ti --rm -v /c/Users/Michael/datasets:/datasets opendronemap/odm --project-path /datasets project command line succeeded. The command line docker run -ti --rm -v /c/Users/Michael/dronemaps/datasets:/datasets opendronemap/odm --project-path /datasets project failed. Both used the same images.

Question:
Is it allowable to process multiple projects at the same time? Or does each project need to be process till completion one at a time?

It looks like it might have failed with an Out-Of-Memory error.

How much RAM do you have available on your host, and how much pagefile?

Also, have you tuned your wslconfig according to Microsoft’s documentation?

I did not find a wslconfig file on my system. I am suspecting that it may not be installed or at the very least is running with default settings if it is installed.

I tried some experiments running just a single Docker instance with the images on a different drive after updating the VM to include the additional path and that single instance failed.

I then cleaned out the results from the directory path that originally passed and ran the process again. The first time the process was run, passed but subsequent runs fail with the same error. I then tried deleting the old default VM and running the Docker Quickstart again to recreate the VM.

My PC’s memory utilization looked stable while running the process.

Correct. You’ll need to create one, and the linked documentation should walk you through how.

If you’ve not set one up, the WSL2 component should not be using more than 50% of your system’s total RAM capacity by default, and with no SWAP/pagefile volume.

You can adjust things using the linked documentation. In terms of best practices, I’d leave at least 4GB RAM for Windows to have some wiggle room.

You shouldn’t need to install any. Docker for Windows has its own, and uses WSL2 as the backend.

If you setup your global wslconfig as per the documentation, Docker will see and use it.

I am not using the Docker Desktop installation but the Docker Toolbox installation as was recommended in the Getting Started page

I did a search anyways for a *.vhdx file and could not find one anywhere on my PC. I have added more physical memory to my PC bringing it to 32GB and adjected the VirtualBox memory to 70%.

I still installed WSL2 and created a .wslconf file but I do not think it is being used in this use case.

Try again but substituing Docker Desktop instead.

Docker Toolbox is for older/legacy systems that would not support Hyper-V and therefore WSL2, which Docker Desktop relies upon by default.
