Greeting from a Canadian Surveyor

Good day to all!

I am a Land Surveyor from Canada and I’ve recently purchased a DJI Mini series drone to explore the possibilities of incorporating drone data into our field work doing cadastral, engineering and topographic surveys.

I’ve only managed to create a smaller (80 picture) orthophoto and accompanying DEM, DTM, 3d model. All of this was quickly produced by a short 10 minute manual flight running a simple serpentine across a wooded job site. But am I ever impressed with what WebODM has been able to accomplish on a 15 year old gaming laptop while sitting by the lake up north for the weekend.

I have come to realize there is much to learn in both the acquisition and processing of drone data and I look forward to taking on this monumental and exciting task. I have already made use of the forum here to refine and troubleshoot some early issues with a decent degree of success.

Cheers and thanks in advance for the help!

Hi @Ted_C

Your timing is great. I’m currently putting together some video tutorials on how to do accurate mapping using a Mini 4 Pro (or any non-RTK drone) and GCPs.

I collected most of the video I need yesterday and ran some initial tests. This involved:

  • Setting out GCPs and collecting their positions using an Emlid RS3 connected to an NTRIP provider
  • Running a capture using Dronelink to automate the flight
  • Creating the GCP file using the GCP Pro tool
  • Importing the photos and GCP file into WebODM for processing.

Since this seems to be what you are looking at doing I’d love to bounce some initial thoughts about the videos off you before I get too far into creating them. Let me know if that’s of interest and we’ll figure out when/how to connect.

You can see some of my other videos here (in case you’re interested) https://www.youtube.com/@aviosmedia

@Ted_C,

Welcome to a great community. What part of the Great White North is your igloo in?

Good to see another moose wrangler on this forum.

Cheers,

Jeff
