I was curious if we are better using one or the other for virtualized ram?

The more physical memory you give WSL access to, the less it’ll have to swap out to disk. I reserve at least 4GB for Windows to keep functioning smoothly when hosting a WSL instance. Virtual Memory in Windows is 32GB.
For in-WSL swap volume, I just have the 250GB VHDX backed by an SSD. This gets cleared out every restart of the WSL host service.
