Trouble with 3d Maps and Models - New to this

I’m new to this. I’m having trouble with viewing 3d maps and models. Having trouble with blank spots with georeferenced Model and Textured Models. The sides of buildings are left blank, etc. I have shot the images 2 different ways with the same results. First at 75° and then at 60°. The 2nd project 433 images of 1/2 city block area so I’m pretty sure there is adequate overlapping.

Do the sides of your buildings have texture (e.g. are they made of bricks?) If they are flat colored (e.g. mostly white) they will be difficult to reconstruct. This is an open area of research in photogrammetry (reconstruction of weakly textured surfaces).

You might need to fly up close to the side of the buildings to capture them, or combine aerial imagery with ground imagery.

The sides of the buildings are a variety of materials. Some are siding, and some are stucco. So, they do have some texture.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a software problem, it’s a data problem. The high contrast results in featureless surfaces. You might be able to get what you need with a different drone that shoots in raw and captures all the bit depths of contrast that you need. Or, per Piero, you need lower flights that capture a small enough area to get the detail you need on sides of the buildings.

For bright surfaces, I reduce exposure by -0.3 or 0.7EV, in order to eliminate overexposed areas. I have Litchi set to show areas of saturation, and also have the histogram on my screen to keep an eye on potential problem areas. Of course, that wont necessarily help on large expanses of featureless surfaces.

I’m going to extend this explanation a bit, because there is often some (understandable) confusion on the forum about the tension between accuracy and completeness. While this is at its core a data problem, it is possible to configure the software to ignore data problems and thus increase completeness. This is at the cost of accuracy. When we get to these choices in OpenDroneMap, we often add flags to help the user tune this, in this case I don’t think we do, so perhaps this is a feature request.

As a rule, software like Pix4D aims for consistency and completeness above accuracy, and that’s super cool and useful. But it can create some confusion when we compare between packages.

I would expect that this is something that we will gradually and carefully tune and improve in OpenDroneMap, but this is a design choice with respect to how we process data at this time. So for the time being in OpenDroneMap, you will need to collect data with better contrast to get the results you want in OpenDroneMap.
