Thoughts on hardware options for a local cluster?

I’ve seen questions around the use of Raspberry Pi, we’ve used Intel NUCs, I’ve seen a picture on social media of a ring of PC towers. I was wondering if anyone has thought recently about hardware solutions for creating a local processing cluster. Questions like… Fewer/ more powerful /more expensive computers versus more/ less powerful/ cheaper computers? Anything on the ODM roadmap that would change what kind of hardware would be the best fit? The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is available with 8GB RAM for $75, is that enough to be useful?

I was just talking to smathermather about this; I think this one has lots of potential, especially because of the 32GB RAM slots and the beefed up CPU: https://www.odroid.co.uk/ODroid-H2 (bonus: runs on x86 architecture!)

8GB is a bit low for doing any serious processing imo.
