I Wonder what happens at a merge after split.

Is there any smoothing at the seams?

I don’t think we’ve ever done a write up on it, but it’s not too different from the proposed solution I wrote up here:

While elevation models are blended as described, orthophotos use cut lines + blending.

How is pointclouds handled?

They are aligned at the structure from motion stage: in essence, they are aligned so that the cameras from all the submodels largely match in position, thus aligning each submodel point cloud.
