Distortion/Landslide with high depthmap-resolution

Created two models from the same data:

  1. Depthmap-resolution = 1000
  2. Depthmap-resolution = 2500
    The second model shows a nice mesh - but when I apply the texture, I get a huge ‘landslide’, breaking the plain, level grass field:
