1000 images, oddly shaped area not captured

Hi everyone,

I’m having issues with my newest mapping. Images were collected over three different flights and they’re not capturing several areas.

Can you describe the flight plan(s) a bit more? Nominal overlap/sidelap? Are the three collects in the same seasonality and lighting conditions?

Yes, it was from the same day although there was an approximate 1.5 hour gap in between the first half of collecting the images and the second half of collecting the images.

Hmm… Am I right in that the flight plans don’t overlap one another at all, but rather run up to the boundary of the prior/next plan?

Is there any significant elevation change in this site from the North end to the South end?

The flight plans do overlap some; I tried to be sure of that. I had to charge my batteries for my DJI mini during this project, so I had to pause waypoints and resume once batteries were charged. There was an approx.1.5 hour gap in between the second and third flight paths. There is not significant elevation in any direction; the property is pretty flat.

Can you try bumping up --matcher-neighbors again to maybe 24 and --min-num-features to something like 64000?

what is your side and front overlap? at 40 meters elevation above take off the flight plan would need to be quite tight to achieve 70% overlap with that sensor.

From the waypoints I plotted I would say that overlap is only like 10 m :upside_down_face: that could be my problem then, eh?

My understanding is at greater altitude I would be able to space the waypoints further apart and get a better overlap?

Does your platform not feature automatic flight planning? What sUAS are you using?

I’m using Litchi as the flight planner with the DJI mini 2. I’m very new to this, I watched a YouTube video about the Litchi app and decided to try it out. Everything has been trial and error and help from this forum

No 10m apart is plenty close for side to side.

With that camera, to achieve70% overlap images to the side should be maximum of 16 meters spacing and images to the front should be around 12 meters maximum. I also use litchi for just about everything mission and love it, however it would be nice if it had an automatic flight planner similiar to pix4dmapper, which will adjust your flight path spacing based on the drone/camera being flown.

Is there a feature that will set altitude, and gimbal angle for the waypoints as a collective or do I have to set that for each waypoint separately? Also, what altitude do you typically fly at? Do you change the altitude based on the size of the land you’re capturing?

Yes you manually set each waypoint, but i have found it is much easier to export from litchi to a csv files and edit the csv files then import the altered csv. Every column is labeled and pretty straight forward.

For flight elevation I fly as high as I can for the desired GSD i would like to achieve, it not only saves time but battery life as well. Also the higher you fly the less images you need to process.

The equation i have used to determine my flight elevation.

GSD = (sensor width * altitude *100) / (focal length * image width)

Image footprint= (gsd * pixel width)

I have compared this to apps like pix4dmapper and looks to be about the same and has worked for me.

Well, I edited the changes of -matcher-neighbors: 24 and min-num-features to 64000 but after 10 hours it says I don’t have enough RAM. Is there a tweek I can try to the settings below which may help this issue?

Well unfortunately feature-quality ultra is a big contributing factor to ram utlization. maybe try feature-qualtiy high and keep min num features and matcher neighbors the same. how much ram does you machine have? swapfile/pagefile size?

you can increase your pagefile/swap partition to help, but makes processing much slower. Other than that I would refer to Saijin for more details.
